Charlie Whiting has died at the age of 66, just a few days before the start of the 2019 F1 season. The FIA confirmed in a statement that he was suffering pulmonary embolism in Australia.
Whiting has been the race director of F1 for 21 years, and was the one who started the race, brought out the safety car, flags etc. Before that he worked at the Brabham and Hesketh teams.
Many members of the F1 community and fans worldwide have expressed their sadness of Whiting's death. The FIA have not confirmed who will replace Whiting as race director.
